Mit der überkommenen Vernarrtheit in Naturidylle – erhabene Berggipfel, Wasserfälle und andere Phänomene –, dieser Erblast des 18./19. Jahrhunderts, die noch heute unbewusst unser ästhetisches Empfinden regiert, hat Gerwald Rockenschaub nichts am Hut; ebenso wenig mit weitgehend selbstreferentiellen theoretisierenden Sinngebungen von Kunstwerken, in denen der Zeitgeist ewig nur sein eigenes Bild erblickt. Edle Einfalt und stille Größe, Erhabenes und Selbstzweck, Aura und Gesellschaftskritik – die ästhetischen Kategorien und selbst die Figur des genialischen Künstlers sind an ihr Ende gekommen, auch wenn man es nicht wahrhaben will. Rockenschaubs Werk lässt die inadäquaten und mystifizierten Kategorien der bildenden Kunst hinter sich: Er befriedigt nicht als schöpferisches Genie, sondern als Dienstleister das „pretty pretty please” seiner Kunden. An die stelle verklärter romantischer Kategorien und komplexer Gedankengebäude tritt eine „simple philosophy” des „private pleasure”: Wie der DJ durch minimalistische Variationen von Rhythmus, Tonhöhe und Klangfarbe aus
wenigen immer gleichbleibenden Elementen völlig neue Erfahrungen produziert, so macht es Rockenschaub im Bereich der Kunst. Die Tanzfläche dort, der Ausstellungsraum hier gerät unter Rockenschaubs Hand zu einem „geometric playground”, auf dem die aufs Minimum reduzierten Elemente – Farben und Grundformen – sich in einem „funky” Rhythmus bewegen und dem Betrachter neue ästhetische Genüsse eröffnen. Nachdem Rockenschaub bereits bei seiner letzten Teilnahme die sommer.Frische.Kunst die Besucher mit einer nun permanent zu besichtigenden Installation erfreut hatte, hat er sich für dieses Jahr wieder etwas ganz Besonderes überlegt – seine Devise: doing the same again.

Gerwald Rockenschaub has nothing to do with the traditional infatuation with natural idylls - sublime mountain peaks, waterfalls and other phenomena - this legacy of the 18th/19th century, which still unconsciously governs our aesthetic sensibilities today, nor with largely self-referential, theorising interpretations of works of art in which the zeitgeist only ever sees its own image. Noble simplicity and
quiet grandeur, the sublime and the end in itself, aura and social criticism - the aesthetic categories and even the figure of the ingenious artist have come to an end, even if one does not want to admit it. Rockenschaub's work leaves behind the inadequate and mystified categories of fine art: he does not satisfy the ‘pretty pretty please’ of his customers as a creative genius, but as a service provider. A ‘simple
philosophy’ of ‘private pleasure’ takes the place of transfigured romantic categories and complex thought structures: just as the DJ produces completely new experiences from a few constant elements through minimalist variations of rhythm, pitch and tone colour, Rockenschaub does the same in the field of art. The dance floor there, the exhibition space here, becomes a ‘geometric playground’ in Rockenschaub's
hands, where the minimalist elements - colours and basic shapes - move in a ‘funky’ rhythm and open up new aesthetic pleasures for the viewer. Having already delighted visitors at his last participation in sommer.frische.kunst with an installation that is now on permanent display, Rockenschaub has come up with something very special for this year - his motto: doing the same again.
